The Occupational Therapy Assistant program offered at Kapi‘olani Community College (KCC) leads to employment as an occupational therapy assistant. Occupational therapy assistants work under the supervision of a registered occupational therapist. By completing the occupational therapy assistant course, you will earn an Associate of Science degree. The AS degree is 76 credits and will take about 7 semesters to complete including 1 semester of prerequisite courses.
Associate of Science
The AS Occupational Therapy Assistant program prepares students to work with clients who need to improve their independence in functional activities relating to activities of daily living, work or play/leisure as a result of injury, illness, the aging process, developmental delays, poverty, or cultural differences. Students will have faculty-supervised clinical learning experiences in addition to classroom work. Students who graduate can take the certification exam and are then licensed as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant in Hawaiʻi.
Admissions Process
There are several steps to the Occupational Therapy Assistant admissions process, and you can begin some of the steps before the next application period begins.
- Attend Mandatory Information Session
- All sessions will be held on Zoom due to Covid-19.
- Seek Advising with Health Careers Counselors
- In-person counseling is currently suspended. Phone or Zoom appointments can be scheduled by calling the Health Careers Counseling Center at (808) 734-9224 or emailing them at hlthsci@hawaii.edu.
- Take the ACCUPLACER WriterPlacer Placement Test
- You must receive a score of 5 or higher or qualification of ENG 100.
- Apply to the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program
Certification
Graduates of the occupational therapy assistant program are eligible to sit for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam. Then you will be licensed to practice as Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) in the state of Hawaiʻi.
Accreditation
The Occupational Therapy Assistant program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE)of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
Kapi‘olani Community College is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) which is a regional accrediting commission. The ACCJC is accredited by both the USDE and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
